MRP does more than calculate a total shortage. It determines when each requirement occurs and whether supply arrives in time to satisfy it.

The March 25 requirement creates a projected shortage even though the total inventory and Purchase Order supply appeared sufficient for earlier demand.
MRP must evaluate both quantity and timing. Supply that arrives after the requirement date does not prevent a production shortage.
